In spite of all of the advantages of algae for producing valuable bioproducts (see Why Algae), when we opened for business, algae was not suitable for commercial biomanufacturing. There were few tools and limited knowledge available in order to harness algae to make specific products such as enzymes, vaccines, and medicine.
